Your seeds have germinated! Now what? This webpage will provide you with instructions on how to transplant your seedlings.Â
Instructions:
Seedlings can be repotted into a larger pot as soon as they have a first set of true leaves, which are larger leaves that are big enough to allow you to identify the species, and the seedlings are at least two inches tall.
Typically, the seedlings can then be transplanted into your garden when they have at least one set of true leaves, and are at least 2 inches tall.Â
Quick step-by-step videos are available in the How to transplant and repot seedlings playlist on our YouTube channel.Â
Written instructions
- Use pots that are at least 3 inches deep. Avoid short pots or pots made out of coconut or egg carton material.
- Prepare all your pots first. Put potting mix soil in the pots, tap the soil down and wet the soil. You can use a pencil to create holes for your seedlings.
- Moisten your seedlings.
- For seedlings with true leaves, starting from the outside of your pots, use a fork to loosen their roots and dig out the seedlings. If the seedlings are tangled, soak them in water first, then try to separate them. Put your seedlings in the holes you created and tap the soil around your seedling.Â
- For seedlings that are smaller, you can transplant a cluster of them, put them in the pot and tap the soil around them.
- Water your seedlings again.
- When the seedlings are about 2 inches tall, and have a set of true leaves, you can transplant them in the garden.Â
- Make sure that the seedlings are wet first, then dig your hole in the ground. Tap down the soil around each seedling. Water the seedlings again.
